Singapore Blooms: Desert Rose is an acrylic on canvas expressionism painting by Nidhi Samani, an Indian-British artist living in Singapore. Her art was influenced by the Desert Rose, a flowering plant native to North Africa and a prolific bloomer in Singapore’s tropical climate.
Pink and red blossoms are the art’s main focus. Their eye-catching hues are situated in the midst of an austere sea of deep blue. The flowers sit atop barely-opaque leaves; again, pink and red faintly appear in their foliage. Sponge-like application of masses similar to the flowers’ colors accent the border, leaving a harmonious result between the subject and the rest of the painting.
Easily, the art can be interpreted as such: the flowers resemble the ports of Singapore, because like the city-state, the desert rose thrives in this metropolis, essentially on top of water, without the support of a hinterland.
Singapore is similar to the flower in the way that it can also be considered desirably distinctive and to an extent, is also somewhat of a fine import of Southeast Asia.
The city-state, unbeknownst to many, is the product of economic development drawing interest to foreign workers to live in this world-class city. 39% of the city’s population is comprised of foreign nationals. Most of its residents are ethnically Chinese, Malay, and Indian.
Heavily populated with foreigners, many of whom are citizens, the city adopted four national languages behind the major national language of Malay; English is the unifying language and Chinese and Tamil are recognized to support the city’s other major minority populations.
The reasons foreigners take up residence in the city are due to plentiful well-paying jobs, low unemployment rates and poverty, heavily subsidized healthcare, and what is considered to be the best education in the world.
It goes without saying, Singapore’s culture is that it’s a melting pot of cultures. The city is the epitome of “fusion” before the word was adopted by mainstream media to explain the well-integrated blend of cultures.
